They need to come down in price for the "players", and they have to get a lot faster. People are frustrated with how they work because the buying public now aren't the "enthusiasts" they are the picky spenders. They'll still spend money but they want performance for that money.

Secondly, at current price levels, the models will have to record to be competitive. The current play only models have to get cheaper though, that is the first step.

I haven't bought Blu-ray specifically cause the media is way too expensive. $35 for a new title and $25-$30 for an old movie (my local store has deals of 2 for $50 on old titles). When I can go find those same titles for $10-15 on regular DVD (heck sometimes $6.99). So while blu ray is nice, its not worth the $15ish extra per disc.

Even at $200 for the player I wouldn't purchase with the cost of the current media.
