There are two major novelties. Firstly, the heatsink core is made of copper. This has resulted in better heat conductivity as compared with the formerly used aluminum alloy. Secondly, the heatsink ribs are located in a different way. The fan now is in the center. It will blow the air in all directions, not only in two ones as it happened in old models.
These novelties allowed to make the cooler more efficient: now it can dissipate 83W (just for a comparison, Pentium 4 2.2GHz generates about 55W). Sadly, the new coolers are rather noisy (32dB): the present boxed Intel coolers are one of the less noisy ones in the world.
