Advanced Micro Devices is gearing up to release its new platform designed for commercial desktops. The new AMD Business Class platform will not only feature more advanced core-logic, but will also boast with higher-performance Athlon II and Phenom II B-series microprocessors based on improved K10 micro-architecture.

AMD Business Class platforms offer future-ready solutions with the features and interoperability businesses need. AMD supports choice in the marketplace and is committed to open security standards (TCG – Trusted Computing Group) and management standards (DMTF – the Distributed Management Task Force) that support today’s increasingly diverse IT environments rather than locking businesses into expensive, proprietary technology. AMD is actively involved in defining and evolving the DMTF’s Desktop and mobile Architecture for System Hardware (DASH) suite of specifications that are designed to deliver standards-based Web services management for desktop and mobile client systems.

The new AMD commercial platform is code-named Kodiak and is based on AMD 785G + SB710 core-logic with DASH compliant LOM (lights out management) chip as well as trusted platform module 1.2 (TPM) 1.2 from a third party. The AMD 785G features DirectX 10.1 graphics core with universal video decoder 2.0 and supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI and VGA outputs along with add-on PCI Express 2.0 graphics card.

In addition, AMD will introduce its new AMD Athlon II and Phenom II microprocessors B-series that will utilize new model numbering scheme and gradually replace its existing Business Class chips based on older micro-architecture. The new processors will come in AM3 packaging and will support dual-channel DDR3 memory. At present exact specifications of the new microprocessors are unknown, but it is known that in Q3 2009 the company plans to introduce the following models:

• AMD Phenom II X4 B93, B95: 8MB cache, enhanced idle power, 1333MHz memory;
• AMD Phenom II X3 B73, B75: 7.5MB cache, enhanced idle power, 1333MHz memory;
• AMD Phenom II X2 B53, B55: 7MB cache, enhanced idle power, 1066MHz memory;
• AMD Athlon II X2 B22, B24: 2MB cache, 1066MHz memory;

The exact launch date of the new commercial platform from AMD is not known at the moment. What is known is that the company plans to launch the new desktop processors in the third quarter and that in Q1 2010 it intends to introduce higher-performance business class models. The new processors are made using 45nm technology, thus, are more power efficient than predecessors.

AMD’s Business Class microprocessors feature up to 24-month stability and longevity from initial product availability, which means that the models that AMD introduces will be available for as long as two years after the product launch.
