Unofficial sources keep claiming that the forthcoming Athlon 64 microprocessor from the Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices will support PC3200 memory instead of originally intended PC2700 DDR SDRAM memory to boost performance of the part once again.
<%BANNER[article]%>Various web-sites, including PC Watch and Ace’s Hardware, have published information from their own sources saying that the the forthcoming x86-64 Athlon 64 processors will support single-channel PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory, while initially AMD claimed that the CPUs will only feature PC2700 memory.
More RAM bandwidth will definitely help AMD to improve performance of its highly-anticipated processor, however, it may not be so easy to redesign memory controller that is located inside the core. On the other hand, it should not be too difficult to modify it for PC3200 support, keeping in mind that AMD officials say that the company will implement more complex DDR-II memory controller when such memory will be available.
The Athlon 64 processors are expected to be available in September this year, so, after the part will make its appearance, we will learn if the information above is correct or not.
