Quite interesting information about Intel’s upcoming Springdale series of core-logic was unveiled by our sources. It seems that those of you, who own old Socket 478 processors, especially based on the Willamette core, who plan to upgrade to a dual-channel DDR SDRAM platform and boost performance of the system without buying a new CPU, will not be able to perform this smart act. Apparently, i865G, i865P and i865PE do not support lower-end Socket 478 Celeron and Pentium 4 chips.
It was said by a source, who prefered to stay anonymous that i865G, i865PE and i865P core-logic products, due to come between the 12th and 16th May this year, support only Pentium 4 1.80GHz microprocessors and above based on Northwood core with 512KB of L2 cache. Moreover, newer chipsets only support Celeron processors with 2.0GHz and above core-clock.
So, beware from buying the overclockers’ beloved Pentium 4 1.60GHz processor on Northwood core if you plan to move to a Springdale platform in future.
