ALi, who used to be a quite well-known core-logic supplier in the past, recently reported its March sales results. Now the company is mostly concentrated on multimedia and I/O solutions as well as chipsets for lower-end notebooks, we do not hear too much about it simply because those markets are not as dynamic and challenging as the markets of chipsets for high-end and mainstream personal computers.

Fortunately for ALi, it now can prosper on this market claiming high month-on-month growth of roughly 44%, surpassing SiS and VIA, but of course, cannot achieve their sales figures. ALi’s revenue in March reached $13.3 million, which is more than $4 million up from February thanks to more orders and working days on the one hand, but still 20% down from the same period a year before, on the other hand.

Currently 60% of ALi’s sales are generated by multimedia and I/O products, while 40% are earned by selling chipsets for mobile computers. The company expects to improve its chipset business later this year with possible help from UMC, who owns 40% stake of ULi Electronics (ALi’s chipset division) through its 42%-owned affiliate Unitech Capital (see this news-story for more details), though, the improvements will be very moderate from the beginning, as even in the second quarter estimates ALi indicated that revenues for its multimedia devices will generate greater share of sales than earnings from core-logic products.
