Just like Intel indicated in its recent conference call, the Springdale (i865) series of chipsets is in process of grabbing a huge share of the chipset market and mainboard makers now say the same thing: the demand for new-generation mainboards rises as prices for such products decline.

According to various reports, wholesale prices of mainboards powered by i865P/i865PE/i865G core-logic devices have dropped 12.5% since June after Intel had reduced the pricing of its chipsets. DigiTimes thinks that the price drop has caused significant increases in motherboard orders across all segments of the market, including OEMs, system integrators and the clone market, according to motherboard makers.

The FOB prices decreased from $70 to $80 in one month, causing rapid increase of demand for such products. For instance, ASUS indicates that more than a half of its current mainboards are based on i865-series chipset. The share of the Springdale will move up once Intel launches the i848P oriented on price-conscious markets in August or September.

The success of the i865-series also means that chipsets from SiS and VIA are under heavy attack from Intel.
