VIA Technologies has announced its sales results for January 2004, claiming a significant increase in sales compared to the previous month. With revenues only modestly lower than during the same period a year ago will VIA Technologies see a turnaround in its sales declines?

Sales of Taipei, Taiwan-based VIA Technologies grew 31.6% from January and achieved about $49.075 million in February 2004. While this is still 5.65% lower compared to February 2003, when sales achieved $52.014 million, the February 2004 result may still be considered as a breakthrough for VIA, whose sales have been dropping by more than 10% annually every month for quite a long period of time.

Officials for VIA do not comment on the company’s market performance and product mix.

Sources of DigiTimes web-site believe that VIA’s sales in February were bolstered by massive availability of high-performance VIA PT880 core-logic intended for Intel Pentium 4 systems with 800MHz processor system bus as well as dual-channel PC3200 memory. In case assumptions of Asia-based press are correct, sales of one of the world’s largest chipset designers may see a significant increase in March, April and May, when the company launches its new PT890, K8T800 Pro as well as KT890 core-logic products.

As reported earlier, VIA intends to establish a strong position on the lucrative high-end and performance-mainstream chipsets market by being the first to market with its new generation of chipsets supporting innovative technologies like PCI Express or DDR-II.
