Elpida Memory today announced the availability of the industry's first 256Mb Mobile SDR and DDR SDRAM components for various handheld and small form factor devices.

The newly announced 256Mb DDR Mobile RAM devices function at double data rate 400MHz. According to Elpida, the DRAMs are made using 0.11 micron fabrication technology and deliver a 90% power reduction compared to a standard 256Mb DDR SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) chips, and a 10% space reduction compared to design implementations that utilize two 128Mb Mobile RAM devices, thus saving significant resources and cost for mobile applications, Elpida said.

Elpida's new Mobile SDR SDRAM devices EDL2516CBBH (SDR) are organized as 4M words x 16 bits x 4 banks, and have a programmable burst length (BL) of 2, 4, 8. The devices achieve both high-speed data transfer and low-power consumption, they operate on a low-voltage power supply of VDD/VDDQ: 1.8V +/- 0.15V and are packaged in a 9 mm x 13 mm, small FBGA package.

An Auto Temperature-Compensated Self Refresh (ATCSR) function allows the devices' internal self refresh timer to be set automatically, further decreasing power consumption. Auto TCSR eliminates the need for external operation/control because the die itself contains a temperature sensor that automatically changes the refresh duration. Auto refresh functions are offered at a rate of 8192 refresh cycles/64ms.

Additional features of the Mobile RAM devices include a Deep Power Down mode, Programmable Driver Strength and Partial Array Self Refresh (PASR). The products are also available as a “bare die” suitable for implementation in System-in-Package (SiP) or Multi-Chip-Package (MCP) designs.

Samples of both DRAM products are available now; volume production of DDR devices begins in June, while SDR will be made in commercial quantities in August.
