Intel Corp., the world’s leading supplier of microprocessors, on Thursday unveiled its new central processing unit for powerful notebooks. The new chips will target so-called desktop replacement laptops and will offer performance for the exchange of substantial battery time.

The Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor is called model 548. The novelty operates at 3.33GHz, features 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus, Hyper-Threading as well as SSE3 technologies. The chip can be plugged into platforms based on Intel’s 852GME and 852PM chipsets. The new Mobile Pentium 4 processors feature power management Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology that enables lower thermals than its desktop counterpart providing more reliable system performance in a notebook. Thermal Design Power (TDP) of the Mobile Pentium 4 processor 548 is 88W, which is lower than that of a 90nm desktop chip running at similar clock-speed.

The Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processors are designed for larger-sized notebook PCs, also known as “desktop replacements”, typically featuring large screens, full-size keyboards and multiple drives. Such computers typically operate at outlet power, rather than battery power. For computers that require long batter operation Intel ships its Pentium M and Celeron M processors that are parts of Intel Centrino platform.

AMD’s main rival Advanced Micro Devices recently unveiled its latest chip for DTR laptops – the DTR Athlon 64 3700+. The product operates at 2.40GHz, has built-in single-channel memory controller and 1MB cache. AMD said the TDP of the central processing unit was 81.5W.

In 1000-unit quantities, the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor 548 supporting HT Technology is available at $262.
