Sony Computer Entertainment America on Monday officially reduced pricing of its latest PlayStation 3 gaming machine by $100. Sony expects its move to boost sales of its new game console two times, though, analyst doubt that it will happen. In addition, Sony introduced a new version of the PS3 with larger hard disk drive (HDD).

From now on, Sony PlayStation 3 version with 60GB hard disk drive will cost $499, which is $100 lower than before. In addition, Sony has introduced PS3 version with 80GB version, which will retail for $599.

“Our initial expectation is that sales should double at a minimum. We’ve gotten our production issues behind us on the PlayStation 3, reaching a position to pass on the savings to consumers, and our attitude is the sooner the better,” said Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, in an interview with Reuters news-agency.

Even though the price reduction of the PlayStation 3 60GB will affect only North America market, it may be very important for Sony, as because of the higher amount of game consoles sold in the U.S., more games will eventually be developed and available worldwide. Moreover, Sony also said it would improve Internet-based features of the PlayStation 3.

“The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software titles this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for PlayStation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold,” Mr. Tretton said.

Well I still dont think it is enough. If they want to bolster sales, they have to BEAT the xbox360 in price and performance. Now is the time to lower it to $299 or $199, take your losses and wit hthe Xbox360 having so many failures, Sony might once again be king.

Without a HUGE price drop, it just wont happen.

Wait, is the HDD the *only* difference between the two? Thats stupid. Can't you upgrade the PS3 with any 2.5" SATA HDD? I'm pretty sure I can get a larger HDD for another $100.

I can buy a 60GB PS3 and an additional 120GB HDD if I wanted to. It would end up being the same price (or less) than an 80GB PS3.
