While many observers claim that after the majority of Hollywood studios decided to release their movies on Blu-ray disc (BD) the future of rival format HD DVD is doomed. However, this may not be exactly correct, according to those, who back HD DVD. The format appears to be pretty successful in certain European counties and that success cannot be ignored.
“Despite the early stage of HD DVD adoption, we have also seen significant success for the format across Europe. By the end of 2007, HD DVD’s accumulated share of the high definition standalone player market exceeded 60% of the overall market. In the fourth quarter of 2007 alone, HD DVD doubled its European installed base of players,” said Olivier VanWynendaele, a spokesperson for HD DVD promotional group in Europe in his column published by DVD Intelligence.
Since HD DVD promo group has never considered Sony PlayStation 3 as a Blu-ray disc player, hence, there is no surprise that HD DVD has a lead when it comes to install base of standalone players. This may make a lot of sense, as people who buy game consoles, get them to play video games and not to watch movies. According to HD DVD promo group in Europe, if Sony’s PS3 is counted as a BD player along with standalone devices, the movie attach rate to all BD-capable devices will be less than one. By contrast, tie rate of HD DVD movies to HD DVD players is 3.5 titles to one device in Europe.
But while 3.5 movies per player attach rate can hardly impress anyone, what may be more important in Europe is that locally made content is truly popular. Due to the fact that HD DVD media is more affordable compared to BD and the replication costs are lower, the format developed by Toshiba, NEC and Microsoft seems to have advantage over Sony- and Philips-developed Blu-ray.
“In countries like France, over half of all the content produced is for the local markets. Local studios and content providers are looking for the format that best suits the local environment. HD DVD has over 20 authoring labs in Europe, which have produced over 150 local titles so far,” Mr. VanWynendaele said, adding that there are 10 Blu-ray authoring labs in Europe which produced less than 80 local titles.
But local content alone will hardly make a format dominant across the globe. In many counties in Europe there are no HD DVD players sold at all, but there are Sony PlayStation 3 video game consoles for sale along with several Blu-ray movies priced at about €28 - €30 ($). Obviously, a handful of BD movies will not attract masses, but early adopters may bite Blu-ray and continue to support and promote it going forward. At the end of the day, not all people in Europe watch only locally made movies, hence, they will require Hollywood titles, which will be on the Blu-ray in their vast majority starting from mid-2008 in the USA. What should be noted is that in Europe many Blu-ray-exclusive movies from the U.S. are released on HD DVD. That said, the war still goes on.
“HD DVD is still standing, and the format war is not over yet. HD DVD continues to see strong support in the European market, increasing sales of HD DVD players and continued interest in the format from the industry and consumers,” Mr. VanWynendaele concluded.

I love the way that Toshiba ignore the biggest selling Blu-Ray player on the planet in their numbers but are quite happy to include it in their attach rate comparisons.
The reason standalone players don't sell so well is because the best one also happens to be one of the cheapest in the form of a PS3.
They never did find Comical Ali, did they? Someone might want to check Toshiba's PR Office...

Even with a less than 1 attach rate, the sheer numbers of PS3s world wide (est. 9.6 million) means that Blu Ray software still outsells HD-DVD software.
It is a nice attempt at spin by the HD-DVD group, but the game is over now.
It is now only a question of whether Paramount or Universal will go down in history as the big dumb company that figured it out last.

I think they both along with DreamWorks will switch to neutral stance till the next holiday season then it will be all bluray exclusivity around the globe.
HDDVD group should learn from history that we, consumers, respect those who claim defeat in a respectful way and hate those who treat us like a blind orgasms that doesn't have a clue about anything.

OK, I'll play devils advocate, just to try and even things up here:
HD-DVD is the better format, with more features. It has a better menu system, and the players are cheaper. Blu Ray and Sony sucks.
There :-)

I agree it is lame that the format with more DRM won! Now it will be interesting to see if even blue ray doesn't fold against online distribution. Not to mention everyone who is happily purchasing DVD's. 1080i looks damn good on a new LCD.

BD offers more per disk 25gb or 50gb so you Do not need to allways use an dual layer disk on BD, on hd-dvd All movies have to be dual layer so thay can fix all the content on there
alot of BD readers suck Sony readers are shit Do not buy an BD player (apart from the PS3 thats fine as i have one well one with now an Dead hdd in it doing to replace that now with an 250gb one now as i was going to do that any way)

Blu Ray is getting pretty close to having organic dye making it possible to produce Blu Ray discs in mass, like when organic dye was first introduced for DVDs.

Universal are so screwed right now. Not only are stores still full of HD DVD versions of The Bourne Ultimatum but now American Gangster is coming on DVD and also HD-DVD exclusively. Only problem is most folks (with a clue) who bought a HD DVD player recently will have returned it already for a Blu-ray player. If I was looking for a return on my Universal investments I'd be asking very serious questions like "why isn't American Gangster available on Blu-ray?"

HD-DVD might be dead, but their players still have decent value, especially as upscale players with the added support for HD-DVD
(I'd really like to watch Heroes,Matrix etc... in HD)
As for bluray and PS3,they have almost certainly won the format wars, but the PS3 is still lagging in the console wars

The better format won because they sold more players and more software. How hard is that to understand Toshiba?

"HD DVD continues to see strong support in the European market"
Errrr, I suggest Mr. VanWynendaele take a tour to where I work (movie rental/sales shop in Oslo Norway) and I can show him the 5 hd dvd titles vs the 60 blu-ray titles we currently have in stock.
Just drop dread already, why prolong the aggony?

I think PS3 should be consider as a legit BR player. It is the only one that has the potential to stay current with the profile updates. And it is marketed as one now.
I don't know and don't care what is happening in Europe. So far, HD-DVD has been sinking since early this year. By the end of the current get 5 free HD-DVD deal (Feb 28), if the group does not come up with anything new, this will be it for N. America.

What does it mater to the blueray fans if HD DVD survives. There is a enough room in the martket place for both products.
Blue ray fans want the HD DVD to die why? So there is not competition to lower prices, so there is not incentive to get profile 2.0 anytime soon? Why does it mater to you? Could it be that you are really happy with your blue ray player? If your so happy why such venom?
I don't have either player I will wait until bluray has standalone profile 2.0 players under $100. I probally will be waiting along time.

"Tis but a flesh wound"
Still standing on half a leg it seems. I still perfer HD DVD especially because of the lack of features on many of the Blu Ray players. The first 1.1 standard complient Blu Ray player (that isn't a PS3) was Panasonic and it dosen't have an ethernet port so it won't be 2.0 complient. Not only that every time they update the copy protection your going to have to burn a disk and flash the firmware of that blu ray player if it doesn't have an ethernet port. I dislike standalone blu ray players so I pretty much just tell people if they want blu ray just get a PS3. Putting blu ray in the PS3 may cost sony the counsle war, but it's going to win them the HD war.

Where does he live? I think he out of his mind, and should accept defeat and move on. They should get out of the way so the HD movies can get a better price. I enjoy my PS3 and I'm not buying movies, the price its outrageous.

ehh... the french can have their HD DVD. By years end (if not sooner), Blu-Ray will have completely dominated US, Australian and Japanese markets, leaving all those poor sloppy brits to be the only ones desperately clinging onto a failing technology. Happy Valentines Day!!

France and the Canada seem a little behind the curve. What no one has commented on are the Chinese. They seem determined to promote their own standard!
