Sales of Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console have surpassed sales of the original Xbox, the software giant said in an interview. Unlike the previous-generation device, the Xbox 360 manages to keep its popularity.

“We have already surpassed the installed base of the original Xbox, which is a really significant milestone. We’ve been blown away by the appetite of people to consumer digital entertainment experiences,” said Chris Lewis, vice president of entertainment business at Microsoft in EMEA region is quoted as saying by MCV web-site.

Microsoft Xbox video game console was sold in 24 million units worldwide while on the market since late 2001 till late 2005. The Xbox 360 has surpassed that number while being on the market since late 2005 to late 2008.

According to estimates by VG-Chartz, among the new-generation video-game consoles Nintendo Wii is the most successful product with 37.2 million units sold-through. Meanwhile, Xbox  360 and PlayStation 4 have been acquired by 23 million and 17 million, respectively.

Microsoft has not released any formal claims on the matter.
