Some Interesting News from PowerColor. [01/28/2002 05:42 PM]

The Chief Executive of CP Technology also known as PowerColor (remember their unfaithfulness to NVIDIA story), Mr. Ted Chen, made a couple of very interesting announcements recently, according to Digitimes. Although some of these announcements can be argued about, we still suggest taking a closer look at them:
  • According to Mr. Chen, NVIDIA now owns about 60% of the desktop graphics chips market, while ATI boasts only 30%. However, the situation should change drastically this year: ATI’s share is expected to grow up to 40%, and NVIDIA’s one should go a bit down (it hasn’t been announced how greatly though). It is exactly this significant ATI share increase that CP Technology is going to profit from this year.
  • ATI’s current share in the mobile graphics chips market is claimed to equal 65%. Although we imagined it to be somewhat higher, to tell the truth.
  • Then, Mr. Chen dwelled on ATI’s plans for the near future, as they are the No.1 partner of CP Technology Company. At first, he noted that "performance of the RV250 is estimated to be 1.5 times better than that of the Radeon 8500" (if they are talking about RADEON 8500 XT then this statement appeared pretty questionable). Also he promised that RV300 chip will be rolled out in the second quarter (this is no news already) and a RV350 chip by year-end (though this is news it is not very interesting as we hardly know anything at all about this chip).
  • And in conclusion, Mr. Chen said that CP Technology was going to keep moving their production capacities to China. If they managed to produce in China only 20% of their graphics cards last year, this year this number should reach 50%.
