HighTech Information System (HIS), a maker of graphics cards based on ATI Radeon graphics processing units (GPUs), is expected to showcase graphics boards featuring two Radeon X1600 XT graphics processors at Computex Taipei 2006 show in Taiwan. This is going to be one of the first contemporary dual-chip graphics cards featuring ATI’s processors.

HIS’ dual-GPU Radeon X1600 XT graphics card will employ a special TLX bridge chip that will connect the chips between each other and the system. Similar bridge is used by Nvidia Corp. on its dual-GeForce 7900 GT graphics cards. However, while Nvidia may promote its yet-to-be-released GeForce 7950 GX2 graphics cards as the most-powerful single graphics products, dual-Radeon X1600 XT will hardly achieve performance of the Radeon X1900 GTO, which retails for $299.

HIS Gemini Radeon X1600 XT board will sport two Radeon X1600 XT chips with 590MHz clock-speed, 256MB of 1380MHz GDDR3 memory per processor, two dual-link DVI outputs, single-slot dual-fan cooling system, according to HKEPC web-site.

Pricing of dual-GPU Radeon X1600 XT product remains unknown. Earlier this year GeCube planned to sell its graphics board with two Radeon X1600 XT chips for $399, later on, the company reconsidered its plans, but did not set any concrete price-points. Now that the Radeon X1900 GTO with 36 pixel shader processors, 12 texture units and 8 vertex shader processors released with recommended price of $299, the dual-chip Radeon X1600 XT should retail at a lower cost, if the manufacturers want such a product, which boasts with 24 pixel shader processors, 8 texture units and 10 vertex shader processors, to be successful.

Neither ATI, nor HIS, commented on the news-story.
