nVidia: We got away with it guys!

| Date: 06/09/09 02:14:45 PM]Despite of failing graphics processing units (GPUs) that were discovered last Summer, sales of Nvidia GeForce products have not been affected, the company said. The claim may indicate that either the failure rates were not critical enough or that for certain computer makers were not interested in rock-solid reliability of their products.
“None of the OEMs held that against us or anything hoping to minimize the perceived impact. I think we stepped up and we did a good job with how we handled that,” said Ujesh Desai, vice president of GeForce desktop business at Nvidia, in an interview with Electronista web-site.
Nvidia admitted last year that its GeForce graphics processing units (GPUs) and nForce chipsets (which the company calls MCPs, media and communication processors) designed for mobile computers could fail due to issues with high-lead packaging. The company took $196 million charge to help its partners to tackle the problem, however, it said that the issue only affected certain notebook configurations.
Nvidia officially admitted that its GeForce 8400M and 8600M were affected by the issues with non-eutectic packaging, however, there is information that certain nForce chipsets as well as GeForce 8800/9800-series solutions were also affected.
Potential product issues might cause sales of graphics chips to decline, however, it appears that the majority of Nvidia’s clients did not slash their orders and boost utilization of ATI Radeon hardware in their notebooks.
